Whirlpool therapy is recommended by many doctors for the treatment of wounds. Patients
report excellent results and faster healing of wounds in the extremities
when whirlpool treatment is utilized. At The Health Centers, whirlpool
therapy is used for a variety of conditions. It is used primarily
to increase circulation and blood flow, to soften and loosen tissue,
for wound cleansing, to reduce infection and effect pain management.
When your doctor recommends whirlpool treatment you will be asked
to remove any foot coverings or jewelry. The area of treatment
will be submerged into the water ranging in temperature from 92
to 96 degrees. Antiseptic may be used in the water but is not
often recommended. Studies show antiseptics can be harmful to
the cells of tissue repair and tap water is four times more efficient
in removing bacteria from a venous ulcer than with povodine iodine
whirlpool.
Once the treatment is completed the wound will be carefully cleaned
following the treatment.
